4 Texas cities lead the nation in new home construction

TEXAS — Houston, Dallas, San Antonio and Austin are leading the nation in residential construction, according to a study from Consumer Affairs that ranked the top 30 U.S. cities building the most new homes.

The study analyzed new building permits and new homes sold in the first two months of 2025 across 150 large U.S. cities.

Houston is the frontrunner at No. 1 on the list. And the numbers don’t lie — in the first two months of 2025, more than 11,000 new building permits were issued in Space City. During the same period, 1,314 new construction homes were sold in Houston, with a 15% increase from January to February.

Coming in at No. 2 on the list is Dallas, with 9,800 new building permits and 750 new homes sold. On the flip side, Dallas had the most costly prices for new-construction homes across all major Texas metros at approximately $450,000 a home.

San Antonio comes in at No. 8 with just over 2,000 new building permits, the fewest of all cities in the top 10 of the list. But what it lacks in permits it makes up for in sales, with nearly 750 new homes sold in the first two months of the year. This boom could be because homes in San Antonio are sought after for their affordability. The median price of a new home in Alamo City is about $270,000 — much lower than other Texas cities in the top 10.

Austin is the last top-ranked Texas city on the list at No. 9. More than 500 new homes were sold in Austin and nearly 3,900 permits were issued in January and February.

These are the top-ranked U.S. cities in new home construction:

  1. Houston, Texas
  2. Dallas, Texas
  3. Phoenix, Ariz.
  4. Atlanta, Ga.
  5. New York, N.Y.
  6. Charlotte, N.C.
  7. Orlando, Fla.
  8. San Antonio, Texas
  9. Austin, Texas
  10. Tampa, Fla.
